mu-zee-um vzw is a dynamic organisation dedicated to cultural education and participation. With a passion for art and heritage, mu-zee-um offers inspiring projects and activities for a broad audience. Proud holder of a Quality Label (ESC) and Accreditation (Erasmus+), mu-zee-um strives for quality and engagement in every aspect of its work.

Are you young and would you like to make the world a better place? Or are you between 18 and 30 years young and keen to explore the world as a volunteer? Then ESC is the perfect programme to make your dreams come true… and it is completely free!!!

ESC = A European programme that gives young people the chance to take part in an organisation of their choice in another country, for anything from a short stay up to 12 months. As a host organisation, mu-zee-um vzw has been welcoming ESC volunteers since 2005 — and as a sending organisation has been sending young people abroad since 2004. Flemish youngsters discover other cultures and bring their newfound experience back to mu-zee-um.

For mu-zee-um, this international touch has become a firm fixture! The European Solidarity Corps is a funding programme of the European Commission for projects that help build a better world.

Exchanges

Since 2005, mu-zee-um has taken an active part in European exchange projects. Young people aged 13 to 30 meet other European peers through art and culture projects. By now we organise several exchanges a year: for 13-to-18-year-olds, for 18-to-30-year-olds, and inclusive exchanges.

This way, young people discover a whole range of European cultures… Ostend, Malta, Finland, Czechia, Iceland, Sweden, New Caledonia, Greenland, Norway…

From intergenerational exchanges to inclusive museums: twenty years of European collaboration, project by project.

2010 – 2012

Generation-Cross-Over

A project focused on intergenerational and intercultural exchange, in which artistic expression and learning strengthened the bond between generations and cultural identities. It helped break down stereotypes and foster tolerance and mutual understanding between generations and cultures.

2012 – 2014

ETNA

In the ETNA project, six European organisations worked together to give seniors the chance to explore art — especially contemporary works — through interactive methods, both at home and abroad. The project promoted active ageing and intercultural dialogue and grew participants' cultural and technological skills. The international dimension encouraged multiculturalism and stimulated active participation in transnational meetings. Seniors also learned new technologies and applied them for international communication.

This strategic partnership offered a platform for exchanging good practices between organisations active in the youth field with experience in using artistic tools to support the development of young people as individuals and as members of society.

Tandem

In the three-year TANDEM project, partners from seven countries worked together to develop new approaches and tools for people with disabilities to explore museums. The project supported a better understanding of inclusiveness in education and encouraged creative approaches for diverse groups of learners, with and without disabilities. TANDEM offered a unique chance to share good practices and develop new knowledge. By developing interactive methods and new technologies, we made museums and non-formal education accessible to adults with various disabilities (such as visual and hearing impairments, autism, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.). We also focused on involving people with fewer opportunities, such as low-skilled adults and the unemployed.

Art For Social Change

The project was carried out by three organisations that use art to tackle societal problems and foster social inclusion. After developing an effective methodology to address urgent issues through art, the organisations used this project to share their new methods and approaches. These can help tackle societal challenges such as increased immigration flows, the rise of far-right movements, violent radicalisation among young people and euroscepticism.

IAM — Inclusive and Accessible Museums

This strategic partnership supported staff from the cultural and youth sectors in using innovative art and culture methods to involve disadvantaged young people — especially young people with disabilities — in processes that foster their social inclusion and skills development. Through this partnership, the organisations and museums developed and tested tools to involve young people with disabilities in learning processes. Art and culture became more accessible to them while they developed their creativity and cultural appreciation.

The main goal of the project is to strengthen inclusion work with disadvantaged young people — especially young people with intellectual disabilities — at local level and within the Erasmus+ programme. This is achieved through an exchange of practices between stakeholders with different experiences and by developing an innovative methodology for supporting young people in taking part in youth-work programmes, reflecting on learning and obtaining a Youthpass.
